Item #34448

US Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle by Springfield Armory

  • Maker: Spfld
  • Model: Trapdoor
  • Caliber: .45-70

  • Description: Serial #71455, .45-70, 32 1/2” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle that retains 90-92% of the original blue on the barrel that has begun turning to a plum-brown patina, and has some mild silvering at the muzzle. The lock, receiver, barrel bands, trigger guard, and ramrod all retain a smooth blue-brown patina, while the hammer has traces of muted color case-hardening with speckled gray-brown on the balance. The “MODEL 1873” marked, low arch breechblock has a dark blue-gray patina with lighter streaks along the top. The walnut stock has a few negligible handling marks in the original dark brown oil finish, however there is a short, repaired with-the-grain crack on the left side running from the breech to the rear lock screw bolster. A crisp “ESA” cartouche is present on the left side of the wrist. The action is still tight, the breech lock-up is firm, and the rifle excellent condition overall. Antique
