Maker: W.Ketland Model: Officer fusil

A light weight officers fusil weighing 8.35 pounds with the bayonet. The flintlock plate is rounded with a double outline and a crown over "w. Ketland & Co". "British Gunmakers Vol II" by Nigel Brown lists William Ketland Gun & Rifle Maker, Steelhouse Lane & Whitt St., Birmingham 1802-1807, and William Ketland & Co. same address 1808-1831. This gun shows Birmingham proofs on the left barrel breech. The overall appearance is that of a slimed down Brown Bess right down to the stock swell at the lower rod pipe and the raised "Beaver Tail" around the top barrel tang. Brass furniture with a steel trumpet shaped ramrod 40" barrel of .67 caliber and an overall measure of 55 3/4". Included is a socket bayonet with triangular blade 11 3/8" long and 15 1/8" overall.There is a usage crack approx 4" from the bayonet base. Original flint, without repairs and with original sling swivels. This piece shows its obvious age, original petina and has not been cleaned. The rammer is not original and appears to be an old time replacement. This piece was reported to be a war of 1812/Napoleonic wars officers fusil. This piece is in above average condition.
