A model 1860 cavalry sword with 34 3/4" blade made by Ames Mfg. Co. of Chicopee, Mass. Both the ricasso and scabbard drag show N.J. markings. Other ricasso markings are the Ames' name and address with 1864 date and inspector initials S.H. & D.R. The leather grip has lost its wire winding. Nickel plated scabbard also show inspector D.R. on the drag. Overall very good condition with some brown spotting on the blade and scabbard. The drag has a hole and the top scabbard suspension band has been slightly altered for hanging display purposes. The nickel plating indicates that this was probably an officer's sword. There were a limited # of NJ cavalry units. This sword is relatively uncommon.
